Everyday Math for Kids

Tensai STEM Academy's Pre-K and Kindergarten math focuses on understanding concepts, not memorization. Children explore numbers, shapes, patterns, and measurement through hands-on activities and real-world experiences.

Number Recognition

Children recognize and name numbers.

What Kids Learn:

  • Numbers represent quantities
  • Numbers have names and symbols

Example Activities:

  • Recognizing numbers 1–10 (and beyond)
  • Pointing to numbers on charts or toys

Practise writing numbers

Counting Objects

Children count objects accurately using one-to-one correspondence.

What Kids Learn:

  • Each object is counted once
  • Counting in order matters

Example Activities:

  • Counting blocks, toys, or snacks
  • Placing one object per count

Comparing Quantities

Children compare amounts using simple math language.

What Kids Learn:

  • More, less, and same
  • Which group has more objects

Example Activities:

  • Set up two groups of toys
  • More apples vs. fewer apples

Simple Addition

Children explore combining groups of objects. (Numbers are optional — objects are more important.)

What Kids Learn:

  • Putting groups together makes a larger group

Example Activities:

  • 2 blocks + 1 block = more blocks
  • Counting all objects together

Simple Subtraction

Children explore taking away objects from a group.

What Kids Learn:

  • Removing objects reduces quantity

Example Activities:

  • Starting with 5 blocks and taking 2 away
  • Counting how many are left

Sorting

Children sort objects by one or more attributes.

What Kids Learn:

  • Objects can be grouped by similarities

Example Activities:

  • Sorting by color
  • Sorting by shape
  • Sorting by size

Patterning

Children recognize and create simple repeating patterns.

What Kids Learn:

  • Patterns repeat in predictable ways

Example Activities:

  • AB patterns (red-blue-red-blue)
  • ABC patterns (circle-square-triangle)

Shapes (2D Shapes)

Children identify and describe basic shapes.

What Kids Learn:

  • Shapes have names and features

Example Activities:

  • Circle
  • Square
  • Triangle
  • Rectangle

Shapes (3D Objects – Basics)

Children explore solid shapes in their environment.

What Kids Learn:

  • Some shapes are flat
  • Some shapes are solid

Example Activities:

  • Ball (sphere)
  • Box (cube)
  • Can (cylinder)

Spatial Awareness & Position

Children describe where objects are located.

What Kids Learn:

  • Position words explain location

Example Activities:

  • On / Under
  • In / Out
  • Above / Below
  • Next to

Measurement - Size and Length

Children compare objects by size and length.

What Kids Learn:

  • Objects can be big or small
  • Objects can be longer or shorter

Example Activities:

  • Comparing sticks
  • Comparing shoes

Measurement – Weight

Children compare objects by weight.

What Kids Learn:

  • Some objects are heavier
  • Some objects are lighter

Example Activities:

  • Rock vs. sponge
  • Lifting objects

Measurement – Capacity

Children explore how much a container can hold.

What Kids Learn:

  • Containers hold different amounts

Example Activities:

  • Filling cups with water or sand
  • Full vs. empty

Time Awareness

Children explore simple concepts of time.

What Kids Learn:

  • Events happen in order

Example Activities:

  • Morning, afternoon, night
  • First / Next / Last

Problem Solving

Children solve simple math-based problems using reasoning.

What Kids Learn:

  • Thinking through solutions
  • Trying different ideas

Example Activities:

  • Sharing blocks equally
  • Figuring out how many toys are needed
