Welcome to STEM learning for Grade 1

Math

Counting • Basic addition/subtraction • Shapes • Measurement

Number Sense

Students learn:

  • Counting forward and backward: Students practice counting numbers in order and understanding number size.
  • Representing numbers with objects: Objects like blocks help students see what numbers mean.
  • Comparing numbers: Students learn which numbers are greater, smaller, or equal.

Addition & Subtraction Basics

Students learn:

  • Adding means putting together: Students combine groups to find a total.
  • Subtracting means taking away: Students remove objects to find how many remain.
  • The equals sign shows balance: Students learn that both sides of an equation must be the same.

Patterns

Students learn:

  • Repeating patterns: Patterns repeat in predictable ways, such as red-blue-red-blue.
  • Patterns in nature: Students observe patterns in leaves, flowers, and animals.
  • Patterns in music and movement: Clapping and movement patterns reinforce math thinking.

Shapes & Geometry

Students learn:

  • 2D shapes are flat: Shapes like squares and circles are flat and have sides or curves.
  • 3D shapes are solid: Shapes like cubes and spheres take up space.
  • Shapes have attributes: Students learn about sides, corners, and faces.
    • Face: Each single surface, flat or curved, of the 3D figure is called its face.
    • Edge: The line, where two faces of the 3D figures meet, is called its edge.
    • Vertex: Each corner, where three faces of 3D figures meet, is called its vertex. Vertices are the plural of the vertex.

Measurement & Data

Students learn:

  • Measuring length: Students compare objects using words like longer and shorter.
  • Non-standard units: Objects like blocks or paperclips are used to measure.
  • Collecting data: Students gather information using tallies and simple charts.
